(BRADLEY, WILL) Bambace, Anthony. Will H. Bradley: His Work. A Bibliographical Guide Compiled by Anthony Bambace. New Castle, DE and Boston: Oak Knoll Press and Thomas G. Boss Fine Books, 1995. Large octavo. xxiii, 216pp. Tan cloth stamped in black. As new. An extremely useful guide to the work of Will Bradley. A giant in the design field, Will H. Bradley (1868-1962) became, and is still regarded as, one of the masters of book, magazine, and graphic design during the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts periods. Bradley's typographic and illustrative work expanded the boundaries of both fields. His re-introduction of Caslon type was well received by reviewers.
This bibliographical guide is divided into three principal sections: Bradley's original book work; Books that use Bradley's designs; and Books that were possibly original work. Three additional sections cover Magazine and Newspaper covers, illustrations and advertisements; poster designs; and other selected design work. Entries include complete titles, measurements, notes on publishers, bindings, typeface, colors, other works with similar designs, and generally a note about Bradley's part in a particular publication. Most of the items in the first three sections are illustrated with reproductions of covers and title-pages, and there are many illustrations in the final three sections as well. Also included are author, title, and publisher indices, and an introductory biography that very clearly states the salient points and milestone of Bradley's career.
Although a complete bibliography of Bradley would be near-impossible to compile, the wealth of detail covered here makes this an indispensable guide for the collector, and an extremely useful tool for the student of book design in the later stages of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth..
