Wiener Werkstaette Poster

(WIENER WERKSTAETTE) An actual-size reproduction of the rare Wiener Werkstaette poster produced for the London World's Fair. Boston: Vienna Workshop and Thomas G. Boss Fine Books, 1997. Appx. 20 inches tall by 9 inches wide, printed in letterpress at the Stinehour Press under the supervision of Jerry Kelly, in black ink on laid paper. This, the third in our series of classic Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Arts & Crafts graphic images, is a reproduction of the only English-language poster ever produced by the Wiener Werkstaette. Designed by Professor Koloman Moser and associate, the poster was originally intended for display purposes at the London World's Fair and not for general distribution. Very few copies were printed, and we are aware of only two surviving copies of the original--in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and at the Wolfsonian Foundation in Florida. The design features the WW monogram with the following text: "Wiener Werkstaette, Neustiftgasse 32. These objects have been designed by the artists professors Joseph Hoffmann and Koloman Moser of Vienna and Executed in the Vienna Workshop." The monogram, name and address are set within lined borders, the general text forms a solid block of text of narrower width below; the whole is surrounded by a single black ruled border. The poster clearly demonstrates the ability of the WW to use a simple element such as type to create a distinctive and quite handsome piece of craftsmanship and graphic design. $35.00 (+ shipping)
